OpenURLs: the basics - new UKeiG factsheet

OpenURLs have been around for some time when they were invented to help address the problem of seamless access to full text and other resources. The OpenURL standard means that there is a universally understood syntax to improve access to high quality material. OpenURLs provide linkages to “target” resources (whether full text, or a Library catalogue or other service determined by the library to be appropriate and available to the user).

What they are, how they work and a guide to the terminology. Author: Robert Bley.

Factsheets are available to UKeiG members at: http://www.ukeig.org.uk/members/access/factsheets/index.html

Out-Googling Google

My Internet Librarian International presentation on Out-Googling Google is now available at http://www.rba.co.uk/ili/index.html. I have not written any notes to accompany the Powerpoint so you may not be able to make much sense of some (or even all) of it. Let me know if you have any questions or comments.

The presentation was UKeiG/RBA co-badged because many of the alternatives, and the three top tips, have been suggested by UKeiG members or by those attending UKeiG workshops.

If you are interested in seeing photos of the event, go to Flickr and use the tag ili2006.

Google revamps its RSS reader

Google has at last revamped its RSS Reader. The previous incarnation was ghastly and probably put off many an RSS newbie. The new-look web based reader is greatly improved and I would now recommend it to anyone who is new to RSS and wants to try out some feeds and see what the fuss is about. I have done a quick review on my blog at

UKeiG Web Stats Browser Share

We've just finished analyzing the UKeiG web stats for September, including the figures for browsers used by visitors. The total number of page requests was 37,484. Not surprisingly Explorer 6 came in at number 1 with 59.6% and Firefox was second with 26.26%. "The rest" included IE 7 and 5, Konqueror 3, Mozilla, Netscape, Opera 9 and Safari.
