Introduction

There are countless web sites, books, blogs and reports on the subject of Web 2.0 technology and its applications. Currently a search on Google for Web suggests that there are around 88 million results. This list is more a set of my personal ‘best bets' that I return to on a regular basis for information and inspiration. All the links were checked on 4 June 2008. Unless specified reports listed are free downloads though they may require registration.

Books

How to Use Web 2.0 in Your Library

Phil Bradley, Facet Publishing, 2007, This is without doubt the best starting point for any information professional trying to get to grips with the value of Web 2.0 in a library context. My copy is full of highlight pen markings. Essential reading.

Web 2.0: A Strategy Guide .

Amy Shuen. O'Reilly Publishing, April 2008, ISBN 10: 0-596-52996-1 | ISBN 13: 9780596529963. This is very much a book about creating added value on web sites through the use of Web 2.0 applications, using Flickr as the core example in the first chapter. There is a neat Lessons Learned/Questions to Ask section at the end of each chapter. A good introduction to opportunities and issues.

Web 2.0 and Libraries: Impacts, Technologies and Trends

Dave Parkes, Dave and Liz Hart (editors), Chandos Publishing, Scheduled to be published in October 2008. This is an alert to a book that might well be of value to the CILIP community.

Gary Matuszak, KPMG International, September 2007. http://www.kpmg.com/Global/IssuesAndInsights/ArticlesAndPublications/Pages/Enterprise2FadorFuture.aspx Although quite light in content terms this report is ideal to give to a senior manager who is trying to grasp the implications of Enterprise 2.0. The KPMG branding means that it is difficult for senior managers to challenge the analysis.

What is Web 2.0? Ideas, technologies and implications for education (TSW0701)

Paul Anderson http://www.jisc.ac.uk/media/documents/techwatch/tsw0701b.pdf . One of the most balanced reports I have read about the impact of Web 2.0. Although the author is specifically looking at the academic and education markets there is much of more general interest in this 60 page report.

Tim O'Reilly

http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/oreilly/tim/news/2005/09/30/what-is-web-20.html This is the start of it, as long ago as September 2005. The term was first used for a conference organised by O'Reilly Media in 2004 and this article is the first attempt to pull together the outcomes of the first year of discussions about what Web 2.0 was all about. Essential reading even now.

Go2Web2.0

Blogs

The Impact of Information Technology on Businesses and their Leaders

Andrew P. McAfee http://blog.hbs.edu/faculty/amcafee/ Not the most incisive name for a blog. This blog covers more than just Enterprise 2.0 and so puts new web technologies into the perspective of the broader utilization of IT in business.
