Course Outline

The environment is big news – almost every day there is a story about climate change, waste, a pollution incident, or disappearing species. The environment is an emotive issue, and there are many opinions expressed. Where do the facts come from? This workshop will provide you with a starting point – to find authoritative sources of environmental information, help you keep up to date with what's new and help you work your way through the diverse issues and impacts. It will help sort the wood from the trees!

The objectives of the workshop are to introduce delegates to some of the vast number of sources for environmental information. The workshop will cover:

  • Government departments and committees
  • Influential groups and bodies
  • News sources
  • Research

Who should attend

This course is aimed a people who need a starting point for finding environmental information. It will also help people who need to be aware of alternative sources for this information.

After graduating in Information Management, she started out researching information specifically on waste, and then moved onto the wider environmental arena. She worked for the UK 's leading environmental publication, The ENDS Report, supporting the journalists and helping them identify potential lead stories. Gina moved to the Environment Agency, where she set up a research and information team, helping all staff with their information requests. She is presenting this course in a personal capacity.

Ken Hollywood , Head of Research Knowledge Services, British Geological Survey, who will speak about NORA, the research database from the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Following 12 years working in the private sector (healthcare and IT), Ken joined the British Geological Survey (BGS) in 2004 as Head of Research Knowledge Services, with a remit to ensure services and information resources are aligned with BGS and NERC's mandate on environmental science in the 21st century. Emphasis is on ensuring access to the Survey's output is made as widely available as possible. One outcome has been the development of NERC's Open Research Archive, NORA, launched in 2007, which was conceived and developed by the constituent libraries of NERC.
